Networking gives you the ability to not only meet new people but to make great business contacts, with the internet today there are many ways of connecting with people. We have chats, twitter feeds, facebook, myspace, linkedin, messengers, even the good old telephone. We also meet many people during the day in person that we don't consider to be a valuable asset, but in fact everyone you run into can connect you with someone else.
Ever heard of the term "Six Degrees of Seperation"? It refers to the idea that everyone is on average approximately six steps away from any other person. Meaning you know someone, who knows someone, and so on until the sixth person can introduce you to anyone you would like to meet. Many theories and test were performed on confirming this, along with a few movies and plays written based on idea. It still remains a good theory in thought, linkedin uses this in referring to people in their network.
TIP: Meeting New People - Shake Hands...
The next time you meet someone, be sure to shake their hand and repeat their name. Repeating the name helps you associate a face with a name, it helps the braing keep it in check. A visual reference is usually how our mind works, lets say I ask you not to think of an elephant what picture pops in your mind? Even though I told you not to think of it there it is. Our mind is a very powerful thing, we just have to know how to use it properly. |
